Eliminating all violence against women focus of White Ribbon Day in Ararat

Shelley Wells, Damian Ferrari and Scott Turner place their hand prints on a banner in support of White Ribbon Day. Picture: PETER PICKERINGA COMMUNITY barbecue and a chance to add your hand to Ararat’s White Ribbon banner are just some of the free activities Ararat can take part in next Tuesday for White Ribbon Day – the United Nations International Day for the elimination of violence against women.

Ararat White Ribbon Day walk is the first time Ararat has organised such a large event as part of this international campaign. It will take place at Alexandra Gardens at 5pm and include a walk around the lake and performances from local schools.

Ararat Police’s Senior Sergeant Damien Ferrari has been one of the main organisers of the event and hopes to see as many community members as possible support the event.

“Along with many others, I will be participating in the walk to not only offer my support to victims, but to highlight the importance of us all making a stand to prevent the despicable act of violence against women,” he said.

“I encourage others to come and participate. It’s not just the walk, but it’s the discussions that will take place and the understanding of the concept of White Ribbon Day highlighting why it is so important that we actively, as a community, take positive steps to stamp out these types of behaviours.”

With one in three women in Australia experiencing violence since the age of 15 years and violence remaining the leading cause of death, disability or injury to women aged 15 – 44 years in Victoria, violence against women remains a serious community issue.

Ararat Rural City Council is excited to be part of the event and encourages community support for the White Ribbon walk.

“White Ribbon Day is such an important international event and it is great to see such a broad range of community members, from AME Systems to local primary schools, supporting the walk,” people and culture manager, Brady Curran said.

“We hope to see as many local people as possible join us to walk against violence against women in our community and it is also a great chance for the community to use the new walking track at the lake.”

Attendees at the event will also be asked to take the White Ribbon oath to ‘never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women’. They will join people throughout Australia and the world who will also take the oath on the same day – White Ribbon Day.

Ararat’s White Ribbon walk has been organised by Ararat Rural City Council, Grampians Pyrenees Primary Care Partnership, CAFS, Victoria Police and Women’s Health Grampians.

Pom pom sheep will flock to Landsborough

SHEEP, wool, art and craft will all combine for the Shaun the Sheep Pom Pom Parade in the Pyrenees next week.
南京夜网

Pyrenees Presents Incorporated is bringing the Shaun the Sheep Pom Pom Parade to the Pyrenees region of Victoria, creating a large scale installation of pom pom sheep, attempting to beat the current world record and then exhibiting the results in time for the release of ‘Shaun the Sheep, The Movie’ in Australia next March.

Pyrenees Presents Incorporated is a not-for-profit community arts organisation based in Landsborough, which has been set up to promote and contribute to the arts in the Pyrenees region in the broadest possible sense.

Next Friday November 28 from 10am- 3pm, the project will be launched at the Landsborough Town Hall, where local families and individuals, schools, community groups, disability and aged care services will be attending. The day will comprise art and craft, entertainment and a shearers’ afternoon tea.

Guest speaker at the launch will be Padraic Fisher, director of the National Wool Museum, while there will also be workshops where three local arts and crafts practitioners who use wool will offer lots of activities for all to take part in. A local farmer will also being running a woolclassing workshop.

The main aim of the launch will be to begin making the many pom pom sheep for the large scale installation, and of course to bring along any that have been made already.

President of Pyrenees Presents Melissa Peacock said originally the community arts project was entitled ‘Flock’, and was created by Eden Arts in Cumbria, in the Lake Districts of England, eventually developing into the ‘Shaun the Sheep’s Pom Pom Parade’.

From 2013 – 2014 the project was developed and re-branded by a company called The Wool Room in partnership with Aardman Animations (the creators of Shaun the Sheep) and The Campaign for Wool as ‘Shaun’s Pom-Pom Parade’. Collectively the project has attempted a Guinness World Record for the largest display of handmade sheep – nearly 9000!

“I see this project becoming an excellent opportunity for the communities in the Pyrenees to be recognised on a state, national and international level, celebrating Australian wool via their sheep farming and creative communities in a project that everyone can take part in,” Ms Peacock said.

“With Shaun the Sheep’s help, maximum exposure is anticipated; thanks to their massive targeted reach, along with additional activities to help promote the 2015 movie launch.

“With the Pom Pom Sheep Parade project launching in Landsborough in the Pyrenees Region, then opened up to communities within and around the region, I see this project as a rare opportunity for all ages, abilities and people from all walks of life to be creative together.”

Ms Peacock said at the conclusion of the project, the pom pom sheep will be exhibited locally at the Ararat Regional Art Gallery from March to April next year.

“Pyrenees Presents is proud to host this project and feels it will encompass the dynamic differences that exist with regional Victoria,” she said.

“We see the pom pom sheep also presenting humour to the creators and the audience of the installation; bringing visual comedy and creative connections to quiet places.”

Entry to the launch day next Friday is by gold coin donation and there will be lots of Shaun the Sheep prizes on the day.
